Judge Stewart Bio

Judge Stewart ImageThe Honorable C. Jean Stewart serves as the Presiding Judge of the Denver Probate Court. Pursuant to the Colorado Constitution the Denver Probate Court has exclusive jurisdiction over “all matters of probate, settlements of estates of deceased persons, appointment of guardians, conservators and administrators, and settlement of their accounts, the adjudication of the mentally ill, and such other jurisdiction as may be provided by law.” The Court’s jurisdiction encompasses the entire City & County of Denver, serving more than 550,000 citizens. Effective in 1975, Colorado adopted the Uniform Probate Code, which includes informal unsupervised estate administrations initiated through the Probate Court registrar with little or no court involvement.

Prior to her appointment to the bench, Judge Stewart was a partner and of counsel to the Denver law firm of Holme Roberts and Owen. She is a 1974 graduate of the University of Denver College of Law, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Denver Law Journal and was elected to the Order of St. Ives. Judge Stewart lectures frequently at continuing professional education programs and was the author of Colorado Estate Planning and Administration.

Judge Stewart has been active in a variety of professional and community activities including service as Chairman of the Probate and Trust Law Section of the Colorado Bar Association, Secretary and President of the Denver Estate Planning counsel, a member of the Rocky Mountain Estate Planning Council, the Sections of Family Law and Real Property, Probate and Trust Law of the American Bar Association; a Trustee of the Denver Bar Association, Vice-President of the Colorado Bar Association, and is currently a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and a member of the Executive Committee of the National American College of Probate Judges.

During her tenure on the bench, Judge Stewart has developed and implemented numerous efficiencies to the court, including mediation in adult guardianship cases, standards and procedures for guardians ad litem in protective proceedings, publication of numerous opinions and orders, development of extensive pro se support materials, construction of a website, introduction and implementation of electronic filing under the model court program. Judge Stewart also participates in various statewide training programs in probate, protective proceedings and mental health.
